For this assignment, you will hold discussions with school administrators on ethics in education, then prepare a summary of these activities. Obtain a copy of the teacher code of ethics for your state. If your state does not have a published educator’s code of ethics (most states do), you may use one from a national organization or your local district or school. Using this resource, develop a list of examples of ethical violations that may result in administrative action. Then, meet with your school principal or other appropriate school administrator to share your examples and explain your plan to present the examples to a group of at least three teachers. Ask the principal to identify what they consider the most common ethical issues in your state involving teachers. Meet with a group of at least three teachers and discuss the examples. In the meeting, address the following: What are the possible consequences in your state for a violation of the educator’s code of ethics? How does an educator’s code of ethics differ from legal statutes and case law? What responsibilities should and do educators have if they discover or have knowledge of a colleague violating the educator’s code of ethics? What do you think should be added to or removed from the educator’s code of ethics? Why? Do you believe that teachers in your school or acquaintance are aware of the ethics requirements for teachers?
