Discussion Forum #4: Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Technology Interdisciplinary teamwork (IDT) is a core competency for all healthcare professionals. The benefits of a geriatric IDT center on the ability to deliver patient-centered care considering the whole person. Potential members of the IDT in geriatric care include the patient and their caregiver, dietician, physician, RN, chaplain, audiologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, pharmacist, psychologist, social worker, and speech-language pathologist. The professionals on the geriatric team should have advanced knowledge of aging, chronic illness, and disease. From a professional standpoint, the benefits include shared values, goals, and responsibilities for the care of elderly patients. The opportunity to work and learn from one another increases the growth of the team within their specialty. Developing new skills in communication, collaboration, negotiation, conflict resolution, and time management as team members get comfortable and confident working together. DF #4 Directions: 1. For this lesson, interview a dietician, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech therapist, or other healthcare professional (not RN) to learn how they assist older adults in maintaining their maximum level of functioning. Write at least a two-three paragraph summary of your interview. 2. What new technologies are used in the assessment and/or treatment of the elderly by these clinicians? 3. Post your answer and respond to at least one classmate’s forum. Support both your forum and response with at least two references. Provide references in APA format. Refer to the grading rubric.
