Assignment Question

Answer the two questions: Company Name: Unilever UK

Question 1 To come up with the right solutions, you must understand the problems that need to be addressed. Return to your Module 1 submission and review the three global sustainability challenges your industry faces and which you applied to your chosen business. 1.1 Relevant sustainability challenges Using the above as a starting point, describe the top three global sustainability challenges for your chosen business and industry. You should state whether these challenges are the same as those you identified for the industry in Module 1, or different, and if so, why. For example, you may have become aware of additional, more significant sustainability-related challenges throughout this course, or your business may have special challenges that are not faced by the whole industry. (Max.150 words) 1.2 Personal objectives for driving change Sustainability changes require a team effort to become a reality, but it takes motivated and objective-oriented individuals within that team to commit to influencing that change. Draft four personal objectives you would like to set for yourself to bring about change within your business or sphere of influence. Note that these are goals for you as a change agent, not for the organisation as a whole. They might therefore not necessarily relate to the challenges you described in Question 1.1. Remember to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-oriented (SMART) objectives to increase the likelihood of achieving them. A SMART objective normally links to a company target for improvement – “what” needs to be achieved by “when”. An example of a personal SMART objective might be: · “Facilitate the introduction of sustainability-related assessment criteria in the performance management system of Company X, by June 2022”, or · “Agree reduction targets with 20 key suppliers by Dec 2022 to quantify, then reduce Scope 3 emissions for Unilever UK .” (Max. 150 words)

Question 2 Every business and industry faces some barriers to change when it decides to make a radical shift in strategy or day-to-day operations. It is important to manage this change well in order to overcome these barriers. Drawing on the content covered in Module 8, answer the following questions. 2.1 Barriers to sustainability-related change Identify the main barriers to sustainability-related change relevant to your business. List the three most prominent barriers, along with a brief justification of why each deserves to be listed as a top barrier. (Max. 150 words) Start writing here: 2.2 Strategy for overcoming barriers Once barriers have been identified, it is important to determine how to overcome them. Draft a brief proposal for how you plan to overcome each of the three barriers identified in Question 2.1 and get buy-in from key decision-makers. (Max. 150 words) Start writing here: 2.3 Identification and justification of financing options Some sustainability initiatives can save costs – if not in the short term, then over a period of time. However, you may need to make the case for initial investment to create long-term value; this can be challenging and needs to be incorporated into your plans. Identify two potential financing options that would need to be incorporated into your sustainability plan, and why you think these are the most appropriate options. These can be internal or external sources of funding. (Max. 150 words)

Question 3 It is often said that “it’s not what you know, but who you know”, and any business leader or entrepreneur can attest to the importance and power of networking in advancing ideas and getting a project off the ground. In this section, you will draw on the content covered in Module 8 to draft a network and support plan. The aim of this plan is to ensure that you have the right connections and are able to influence important decision makers, to help achieve your personal objectives (outlined in Question 1.2), set your sustainability plan in motion and maintain momentum as the plan progresses. 3.1 Identification of key members within your network Identify three to five key individuals (by name, role/function, and organisation) who can assist you in influencing sustainability-related change within your business. These individuals should be from within your personal and professional network; they might work in your chosen business or in related influential institutions (for example, business associations, government organisations, non-profit organisations, academia and so on). (Max. 100 words) Start writing here: 3.2 An action plan for leveraging network support Draft an action plan for leveraging support from the network you identified in Question 3.1 to achieve your sustainability-related objectives. Your plan should consider each individual you have identified and include the following details: · How you plan on contacting or approaching these individuals. · How you will meet to present and discuss your objectives. (For example, will there be one-on-one meetings, or will you present to them in a group format? Will the network collaborate as a group, or will each individual report separately to you?) · What you will offer them in return for their assistance.

Consider what might motivate them to get involved and the kinds of incentives available for them to participate in. This varies and is largely dependent on the nature of your relationship with each. · Any potential (relational) barriers that could inhibit the level of desired progress (e.g. conflict of interest between two parties) or opportunities (e.g. commonalities between members) that you could leverage. (Max. 250 words)

In other words, what opportunities can you identify for extending your networks and your professional capabilities? (Max. 150 words)
