Assignment Question

The Western used to be one of the staples of old-time Hollywood, but it seems hardly relevant today. But the form is not entirely extinct. Take any contemporary Western (Brokeback Mountain, The Power of the Dog, or Django Unchained come to mind, but there are others) and write an essay in which you explore the differences between the contemporary Western and the classical (Magnificent Seven) and rejuvenated form (Once Upon a Time in the West, i.e. the Spaghetti Western). Are the contemporary films still “Westerns” or have they completely broken away from the formulaic concerns of the classical genre?
