Assignment Question

The final assignment option in this course provides an opportunity for students to examine emerging or lesser-discussed issues in criminology.

Select one of the contemporary topics listed below to analyze: Mass Shootings (School and/or Public) Human Trafficking CyberCrime

First, choose a minimum of three academic, peer-reviewed journal articles that cover the basis of your topic. You should select a variety of articles by journal, research type (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, etc.), and time (various years of publication since 2013). Write to an audience that is relevant to your topic. For example, perhaps a paper on mass shootings could be written to legislators or the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The paper structure is as follows:

Introduction: Introduce your topic, the audience, and the purpose of the paper.

Summary: Summarize and synthesize the articles you selected, including the purpose of the paper, the data/methods, and the results. Be sure to paraphrase.

Theorize: Apply theories from this class that best explain the growth and existence of this crime phenomenon. Explain in detail. Address any key overlaps with course information (readings, lectures, videos, etc.).

Analysis: Provide critical reflection on this information. For example: What are the macro- and micro-level forces that have contributed to the prevalence of this crime? What policies must be enacted to lessen this crime’s existence?

Conclusion: Conclude your paper with a brief synopsis, recommended policies, and insight into the future of this issue.

Guidelines and Format: Typed, double-spaced with 12-point Times New Roman font and 1-inch (standard) margins. Per the syllabus, your paper must be a minimum of four pages, excluding the reference page. PDF or Word files only. You must cite all sources used in APA 7th Edition format for in-text citations and the references page at the end. Paraphrase all information included in the paper. No direct quotes are permitted (subject to penalty = -2 per infraction).
