Assignment Question

In three to four pages discuss the history and connections between two or three of the media channels discussed this semester (i.e., books, newspapers, magazines, recordings, radio, movies, television, digital media) and, based on using at least three sources, explain how and why you think they will evolve in the near future. (Grading Note: The response to this paper requires research as well as information specific to your use of media channels. If those are not evident in your paper, you will receive an incomplete for the work until you supply me with a list of the materials you used to support your work.

Background: There have been and will be significant changes in media content, technology, as well as who pays for it and how. This assignment is aimed to make you an expert in the past, present and hopefully the future of at least two of the media channels we have considered this semester. Your expertise in at least two media channels will serve as a foundation of good information for the future when you or others are studying all media.

Process: Use at least two articles you find by using the library databases, JSTOR, or Google Scholar as references (in addition to other sources you wish to use including the text, materials used for class, other information found through search engines) to help you explain the history and current practices of two or three of the media we discussed this semester. Use at least one more article as a reference to support your predictions for what the future of mass media will look like. A potential outline for your paper is to make a general statement about the future of mass media and the challenges this presents for the channels you will write about. You will then briefly explain the history of the first of your channels (perhaps with regard to its technology highlights and/or business model and/or the growth of its audience) up to the present day. You might then note the challenges it faces today and for the future. You will transition to your second channel, perhaps by noting how the second channel builds on the first before telling its story. Your conclusion will address how you believe these channels will address their challenges and what might be their similarities and differences for the near future.
