Students will identify television and media techniques. Students will connect the elements of popular culture and media usage with previous discussions (i.e. race and gender from the Nickolodeans is one). Students will discuss the meaning of culture and its evolving forms. Using the material we covered this week (the video and the readings), use facts and evidence to show the power of media and television in popular culture. Discuss the most potent elements, backing yourself up with evidence and details from the readings. As usual, you do not have a direction question as you are responding with your own argument and direction. What examples can you use from previous units to elevate and reinforce your viewpoint on culture and how it is altered, supported, or maintained via mass-produced stories and images (i.e., the Nickolodean readings give ample connections here)? Do not rely on quotes; instead, paraphrase and cite your work so your reader hears your voice. Cite anything not your own, even translated material, so that your work gives credit and maintains validity. 350 -500 words, Times New Roman double-spaced, .doc file (other files will not be accepted), must include citations. Make sure you submit the correct file.* You have access to Word via your CUNY enrollment, and you can save files as .doc in Word or by telling Google Docs to save as a .doc file.
