This assignment will examine the course content in relation to an alternate life experience than your own, and will require you to complete a historical analysis of your family experience going back two generations (your parents, and grandparents). You will then describe what benefits and opportunities, or disadvantages and barriers your family has experienced while incorporating the themes and concepts of the course. Next, you’re going to reframe this as if you were of a different gender and if your family were from a different ethnic or racial group. As you’re providing your narrative, you’ll need to incorporate citations to justify and support your statements. These can come from Journal articles, non-biased websites, news articles, the textbook, and any other content that you deem relevant. Selecting a Topic Each student will select an ethnicity that is different from your own (and not a different subgroup within the larger category), and select a gender identity different than your own. The major ethnic groups include: African Americans Asian/Pacific Americans (e.g. Chinese American, Filipino American, Japanese, American, Korean American, Indian American, Hawaiian, Guamanian, Vietnamese American) Latino/a (e.g. Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American) Native American (e.g. Sioux, Pueblo, Navajo, Seminole, Creek, Hopi, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Pawnee, Mohawk, Wampanoag). Gender identity groups include: Male confirming & identifying (born male and identify as male) Female confirming & identifying (born female and identify as female) Non-confirming (born either male or female, and do not identify with either gender) Transgender (born one gender and identify with the other) Paper Submission This paper is a minimum of 8 pages in length (about 2000 words), submitted using APA format (1” margins, standard font type of Calibri or Times New Roman). The page length requirement does not include the APA cover page or references. The paper should include very limited images and media (these do not contribute toward meeting the page length). Your analysis should include at least 10 sources from the class or outside reliable sources to support your narrative. Grades will be based on the following rubric: Topic: Your topic should be representative of an ethnic group other than your own and one that is covered in the course. It should also be focused on an alternate gender identity than your own. Your thesis statement provides direction for the paper by the statement of a position or a hypothesis. Integration of Knowledge: Your work should demonstrate that you fully understand the historical and contemporary experiences of that ethnicity and gender in the United States, including relevant specific political, social, cultural, and economic factors. It should include multiple concepts learned throughout the course. These concepts should be integrated into your own writing and narrative as if you were from that different group. You do not want to focus on any one individual within your family, within that ethnic/cultural group, nor focus on one strand (such as cultural celebrations only) in your narrative. Depth of Discussion: Your depth of discussion should demonstrate that you have a grasp of the course concepts, and can apply them to the particular group that you’ve selected to establish an understanding of another culture’s experience. Use of course themes and concepts in the narrative used appropriately to show understanding of course materials. Cohesiveness: What I am expecting is the demonstration of an ability to tie together information from your listed sources in the paper. The paper should flow with minimal disjointedness. Your writing should demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among materials obtained from various sources. It should also be checked for structure and use appropriate grammar and spelling. Sources: No fewer than 8 in-text citations from peer-reviewed journal articles or books. A minimum of 10 resources overall to be included in your Reference/Citation page. Citations: APA citation style is used in both text and bibliography. Paper is formatted in APA style.
