Deontologists, consequentialists, and virtue ethicists each approach moral problems in a different way. Which do you think is the best framework for thinking about bioethical problems?

Assignment Question

Three essay assignments are due in this class. For each, submit a 700 – 800 word paper to me through the corresponding Canvas assignment. Papers should be written in a legible font and include consistent citations (formatting and style of citation are up to you).

For each essay assignment, answer one of the following prompts:

Deontologists, consequentialists, and virtue ethicists each approach moral problems in a different way. Which do you think is the best framework for thinking about bioethical problems? Describe the theory and what it requires, apply it to biomedical issues, and explain why it is better than one alternative (of the other two theories).

You will be graded on: The accuracy of your description of the theories (25%) Thoughtful and critical application of the theory (25%) Fair treatment of the other theories you object to (25%) General effectiveness in writing (grammar, word use, etc) (25%) Example: Deontology is the theory that is most helpful for thinking through medical ethical problems. This is because it centers patients’ essential human autonomy, something utilitarians do not. Consider a position taken by one of the writers we study in this class. If you disagree, write a paper providing an objection to their argument. If you agree with their argument, consider potential objections—why might people disagree with them?—and describe these objections, then provide a rebuttal to the objections that you think effectively defends the writer’s view. The accuracy of your description of the paper you’re writing on (25%) Thoughtful and critical application of the view (25%) Fair treatment of the opposing view (25%) General effectiveness in writing (grammar, word use, etc) (25%).
